The combination of tender, flavorful meat and the delicate crunch of the pastry makes them utterly irresistible. They’re so much more than your average sausage roll; they’re a journey of flavor, offering a unique twist on a beloved classic.

Why You’ll Love This Oriental Sausage Roll Recipe

There are countless reasons why these homemade Oriental Sausage Rolls will become a staple in your kitchen:

  • Exceptional Flavor: The minced beef is generously seasoned with a blend of delicious warming herbs, including the aromatic Ras El Hanout, sweet chili, and soy sauce, creating a truly unique and appealing taste profile that stands out from traditional sausage rolls.
  • Perfect Texture: Encased in a light, crisp, and buttery puff pastry, these rolls offer a delightful contrast between the soft, savory filling and the flaky exterior. The sesame seeds add an extra layer of crunch and nutty flavor.
  • Versatile & Convenient: These rolls are fantastic as a standalone snack, a hearty addition to lunch, or a sophisticated appetizer for entertaining. They’re incredibly convenient because they can be prepared ahead of time and frozen, ready to be baked whenever hunger strikes or guests arrive.
  • Family Favorite: Both adults and children will adore these flavorful pastries. Their comforting yet exotic taste makes them a crowd-pleaser at any gathering.
  • Easy to Make: Despite their gourmet appeal, the recipe is straightforward and uses readily available ingredients, making it accessible for home bakers of all skill levels.

The Secret Behind the Irresistible Oriental Flavor

The magic of these sausage rolls truly lies in their distinct oriental spice blend. We use Ras El Hanout, a North African spice blend renowned for its complex, aromatic, and slightly sweet flavor profile, which often includes cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, paprika, and coriander, among others. This blend introduces a warmth and depth that elevates the minced beef beyond expectation. Paired with the subtle heat of sweet chili sauce and the umami richness of soy sauce, plus fresh crushed garlic, the flavors meld into a harmonious and incredibly moreish filling.

This careful combination of spices and sauces ensures that every bite is packed with an authentic and satisfying taste, making these rolls truly stand out. The minced beef, rich with these seasonings, becomes the perfect complement to the flaky puff pastry, creating a symphony of textures and flavors that will have everyone asking for the recipe.

Making Them Ahead & Freezing for Future Enjoyment

One of the best features of these Oriental Sausage Rolls is their freezer-friendly nature. Preparing a larger batch means you’ll always have a delicious, homemade snack ready to go with minimal effort. Simply follow the recipe instructions up to the point of baking. Once assembled and brushed with egg wash (but before sprinkling sesame seeds, as these can fall off during freezing), arrange the uncooked rolls on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight freezer bag or container. They can be stored for up to 2-3 months.

When you’re ready to bake, there’s no need to thaw! Just preheat your oven to the specified temperature (you might need to add an extra 5-10 minutes to the baking time) and bake from frozen. Sprinkle with sesame seeds just before baking. This makes them perfect for unexpected guests, busy weeknights, or simply when you’re craving a warm, comforting treat without the fuss of starting from scratch.

Equipment

  • A conventional oven is used. When using a convection oven (with air fan) decrease the temperature with 30 °F / 20 °C
Prevent your screen from going dark

Ingredients

  • 1 egg , size L, essential for binding the meat mixture
  • 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 pound minced beef
  • 1 teaspoon sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (medja or light soy works best)
  • ½ teaspoon Ras El Hanout
  • 1 clove garlic , crushed, for aromatic depth
  • 6 sheets puff pastry , thawed, for that irresistible crispiness
  • 3 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 egg , size S, beaten, for an even egg wash
  • salt and pepper , to taste, for final seasoning adjustment

All my recipes are written both in Metric (gram / ml) and US Customary (cups / pounds). Here you can select which type of amount you would like to see.

Instructions

  • Prepare your oven: Preheat the oven to a steady 200 degrees Celsius (approximately 390 degrees Fahrenheit) to ensure even baking. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  • Combine the filling: In a spacious mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the minced beef, the large egg (which acts as a binder), breadcrumbs, sweet chili sauce, soy sauce (medja or a light variety), Ras El Hanout, and the crushed garlic.
  • Mix gently: Knead the mixture by hand just until all ingredients are well combined. Be careful not to over-knead, as this can make the minced meat tough and solidify its texture. Taste a small portion (if you’re comfortable doing so, or cook a tiny bit to taste) and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
  • Prepare pastry and filling portions: Lay one sheet of thawed puff pastry flat on your work surface. Divide your seasoned minced meat mixture into six equal portions. Take one of these portions.
  • Shape the rolls: Gently form the minced meat portion into a log or roll shape, matching the length of your puff pastry sheet. Place this meat roll along one half of the puff pastry sheet, leaving a small border at the edges.
  • Seal the pastry: Carefully fold the other half of the puff pastry over the meat log. Press the edges firmly together to seal the roll completely. For a decorative touch and extra security, use the tines of a fork to press down along the sealed edges.
  • Egg wash and garnish: Using a pastry brush, evenly coat the top of each sausage roll with the beaten small egg. This will give them a beautiful golden-brown finish. Immediately sprinkle a generous amount of sesame seeds over the egg-washed surface.
  • Arrange for baking: Carefully transfer the prepared sausage roll to your parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat steps 3-6 for the remaining puff pastry sheets and minced meat mixture, ensuring there’s enough space between each roll on the tray for even baking.
  • Bake to perfection: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 25 minutes. The Oriental Sausage Rolls are ready when the puff pastry is gorgeously golden brown, puffed up, and incredibly crisp. The internal temperature of the meat should reach 160°F (71°C) if checked with a meat thermometer. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips for Making the Best Oriental Sausage Rolls

Achieving perfect sausage rolls is easier than you think with these expert tips:

  • Don’t Overwork the Meat: When mixing the minced beef, gently combine the ingredients until just mixed. Over-kneading can lead to a dense, tough filling. A light hand keeps the meat tender and juicy.
  • Ensure Puff Pastry is Cold: Always work with cold puff pastry. This helps maintain its flakiness. If your kitchen is warm, work quickly or chill the pastry between steps.
  • Proper Sealing is Key: Press the edges of the pastry firmly together to ensure the filling stays inside during baking. Using a fork to crimp the edges not only seals it well but also adds an attractive pattern.
  • Even Egg Wash: A uniform egg wash gives your rolls a beautiful, even golden-brown color and helps the sesame seeds adhere. A small, beaten egg (size S) with a splash of water or milk can provide a perfect consistency.
  • Don’t Crowd the Baking Sheet: Give your sausage rolls plenty of space on the baking tray. Crowding can lead to steaming instead of baking, resulting in less crisp pastry. Use two trays if necessary.
  • Adjust Spices to Your Liking: The beauty of homemade food is customization. Feel free to adjust the amount of sweet chili sauce or Ras El Hanout to suit your spice preference. A pinch of red pepper flakes could add an extra kick!

Serving Suggestions & Variations

These versatile Oriental Sausage Rolls can be enjoyed in many ways:

  • Classic Snack: Serve them warm, cut in half, as a delightful snack or part of a casual lunch.
  • Party Appetizer: Cut them into smaller, bite-sized pieces for an elegant and flavorful party appetizer. They pair wonderfully with a sweet chili dipping sauce or a cool, refreshing cucumber yogurt dip.
  • Full Meal: Serve alongside a fresh green salad or a side of steamed rice and stir-fried vegetables for a complete and satisfying meal.
  • Different Meats: While minced beef is fantastic, you can experiment with minced pork, chicken, or a combination. For a vegetarian option, try finely chopped mushrooms and lentils seasoned similarly.
  • Spice It Up: Add finely chopped fresh ginger, spring onions, or a dash of five-spice powder to the meat mixture for even more aromatic complexity.
  • Cheese Twist: For an extra layer of flavor, sprinkle a little grated cheddar or mozzarella cheese over the meat before folding the pastry.

We hope you enjoy making and devouring these delicious Oriental Sausage Rolls as much as we do. They are truly a delightful creation that brings together the best of savory pastry with an exciting blend of Eastern-inspired spices. Happy baking!
