A Creepy-Cute Halloween Delight: Why Spooky Sausage Mummies Are a Must-Make
Halloween is all about embracing the spooky, the silly, and, most importantly, the scrumptious! Our Spooky Sausage Mummies perfectly capture this spirit. They offer that quintessential “creepy-cute” aesthetic that makes them ideal for any Halloween-themed event, from school parties to adult get-togethers. Forget elaborate decorations; these little mummies serve as both a delightful snack and a fantastic conversation starter. Their unique appearance makes them stand out on any snack table, promising both a visual treat and a savory delight.
But what truly elevates these Halloween Sausage Mummies from merely “cute” to “absolutely fantastic”? The answer lies in their sheer simplicity and universal appeal. First and foremost, they are incredibly easy to prepare. This means less time fussing in the kitchen and more precious moments enjoying the festive atmosphere and engaging with your guests. Parents, rejoice! This recipe is also wonderfully kid-friendly. From unrolling the dough to wrapping the “bandages” around the hot dogs, children often love to get involved in the preparation. It’s a fun activity that doubles as a cooking lesson, creating lasting Halloween memories.
Beyond their ease of creation, the taste of these mummy dogs is simply irresistible! The magic happens when flaky, golden-brown croissant dough bakes around juicy Frankfurters. This combination creates a perfect harmony of flavors and textures: a delightful crunch from the pastry yielding to a warm, savory sausage. Each bite offers a satisfying experience that makes them a true crowd-pleaser. Plus, the melted cheese in the “eye” opening adds an extra layer of flavor and ensures those candy eyes stick perfectly, bringing these spooky characters to life.
Whether you’re hosting a big Halloween bash, preparing a special treat for your family, or just looking for a fun activity with the kids, these Spooky Sausage Mummies are an undeniable winner. They’re a fantastic addition to any Halloween menu, promising smiles, delicious bites, and a touch of seasonal spookiness.

Ingredients
- 1 slice Cheddar cheese
- 6 sheets croissant dough
- 8 Frankfurters
- 16 candy eyes
All my recipes are written both in Metric (gram / ml) and US Customary (cups / pounds). Here you can select which type of amount you would like to see.
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for a conventional oven or 320°F (160°C) for a convection oven. This ensures your mummies bake evenly and become perfectly golden.
-
Prepare a baking tray by lining it with baking paper (parchment paper). This prevents sticking and makes for easy cleanup.
-
Take your slice of Cheddar cheese and cut it into eight small, rectangular pieces. These will create the “eye” base for your mummies.1 slice Cheddar cheese
-
Carefully unroll the croissant dough from its packaging. You should have enough dough to create three large rectangular sheets (or “squares” if using a pre-cut variety).6 sheets croissant dough
-
With a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut each large dough square into six even strips lengthwise. To create longer “mummy bandages,” gently place two strips end-to-end and lightly press them together to seal. This will give you enough length to wrap around the hot dogs effectively. Repeat this process for all dough strips.
-
Take one Frankfurter and begin wrapping a dough strip around its bottom, working your way up in a spiral pattern. Don’t wrap too tightly; a slightly loose wrap will give it a more authentic mummy look. As you approach the top, leave a small opening for the “face” or eyes. If you have any leftover dough from the strip, continue wrapping it downwards to create more layers. Place the wrapped Frankfurter on your prepared baking tray.8 Frankfurters
-
Gently press one of the small cheese pieces into the open space you left for the eyes at the top of the hot dog. This cheese will melt during baking, creating a perfect sticky surface for the candy eyes later.
-
Bake the wrapped Frankfurters in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes, or until the croissant dough is beautifully golden brown and cooked through. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-browning.
-
Once baked, carefully remove the mummy dogs from the oven. Immediately, while the cheese is still warm and melted, stick two candy eyes onto each mummy. Work quickly, as the cheese will solidify as it cools, making it difficult for the eyes to adhere.16 candy eyes
-
Serve your Spooky Sausage Mummies immediately while warm for the best taste and texture. However, they are also surprisingly delicious when eaten cold, making them perfect for lunchboxes or party leftovers!
Notes
- If you don’t have croissant dough, you can easily substitute it with puff pastry or even refrigerated biscuit dough, cut into strips. The baking time might vary slightly, so keep an eye on them.
- To ensure the dough stays wrapped around the sausage and doesn’t unravel during baking, make sure to tuck the ends of the puff pastry strips neatly underneath the sausage.
2. Delicious Dips:
These Spooky Sausage Mummies are fantastic on their own, but they’re even better with a selection of dipping sauces! Offer classics like ketchup and mustard, or spice things up with BBQ sauce, ranch dressing, or even a sriracha mayo for the adults. Arrange them creatively around your mummy platter.
3. Extra Cheesy Mummies:
For an extra cheesy surprise, add a thin strip of cheese (like a mozzarella stick cut lengthwise or a piece of string cheese) alongside the hot dog before wrapping it in the pastry. This melts inside, creating an ooey-gooey center!
4. Make Ahead Tips:
You can prepare the mummies a few hours in advance. Wrap the hot dogs in dough and place them on the baking sheet, then cover lightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake. When ready, simply pop them into the preheated oven. You can also freeze the unbaked mummies: arrange them on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Bake from frozen (no need to thaw), extending the baking time by approximately 2-5 minutes until golden brown and heated through.
5. Storage of Baked Mummies:
While delicious cold, it’s generally best to consume baked Spooky Sausage Mummies on the same day they are made. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave for a quick snack.
