Essential Ingredients for Your Zesty Lemon & Ham Spaghetti

To whip up this delightful Italian-inspired spaghetti with ham, you’ll need a handful of fresh, high-quality ingredients. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the way each component contributes to a wonderfully balanced flavor profile. You’ll find the precise measurements for each in the detailed recipe card conveniently located at the bottom of this blog post. Let’s dive into what makes these ingredients so special:

Ingredients for Italian Spaghetti with Ham individually labelled on a clean white background
Key ingredients laid out for our quick and flavorful spaghetti dish.
  • Spaghetti – The foundation of our dish! You can opt for either fresh or dried spaghetti, preparing it according to the package directions to achieve that perfect al dente bite. For those who enjoy variety, this versatile recipe also works beautifully with other pasta shapes like tagliatelle, linguine, or even penne. Choosing a good quality pasta will make a noticeable difference in the final texture and taste of your meal.
  • Ham – We recommend using pre-cubed ham, readily available at most supermarkets, for ultimate convenience. Its savory notes perfectly complement the other fresh ingredients. If you’re looking for a delightful vegetarian alternative, simply replace the ham cubes with (semi) sun-dried tomatoes. Halve them before adding to the pasta to infuse a burst of rich, umami flavor. You could also try crispy pancetta or finely diced prosciutto for a more gourmet touch.
  • Capers – These small, green flower buds are typically preserved in a salt and vinegar solution, giving them their distinctive piquant and slightly sour taste. To ensure their flavor doesn’t overpower the delicate balance of the dish, it’s crucial to rinse them thoroughly under cold water before incorporating them. This simple step mellows their intensity, allowing them to provide a pleasant briny counterpoint.
  • Arugula – Known for its wonderfully peppery and slightly bitter notes, arugula (also known as rocket) adds a fantastic “bite” and a refreshing green element to the spaghetti. It’s a type of leafy green that wilts quickly when exposed to heat, so the secret to keeping it vibrant and crunchy is to add it only at the very last minute, just before serving. This ensures it retains its fresh texture and lively flavor.
  • Lemon – Fresh lemon is the star that brightens this entire dish! We use both the juice and the zest for a double dose of citrusy freshness. Always opt for fresh lemon juice; its bright, tangy flavor far surpasses that of bottled varieties. The zest contains essential oils that add a complex aromatic quality, making the dish truly sing. A little extra drizzle of fresh lemon juice at the end can elevate the flavors even further.
  • Optional additions for extra flavor: A drizzle of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of red pepper flakes for a subtle heat, or finely minced garlic (sautéed with the ham) can all enhance this delightful dish, though it’s perfectly delicious as is!

Visual guide to preparing your delicious Ham and Arugula Spaghetti.
  1. Cook the Spaghetti: Begin by cooking your spaghetti according to the package instructions. For that perfect Italian “al dente” texture, which means “to the tooth” with a slight bite, you might want to cook it 1 to 2 minutes shorter than the recommended time. Remember to reserve a little bit of the starchy pasta water before draining, as it can be used to loosen the sauce if needed.
  2. Sauté the Ham: While your pasta is cooking, heat a pan and briefly fry the ham cubes until they turn slightly golden and develop a delicious, crispy texture. This step brings out their savory depth. Once cooked, transfer the ham to the drained spaghetti, then mix in the fresh lemon juice. The warmth of the pasta will help the flavors meld beautifully.
  3. Add Freshness & Zest: Next, incorporate the bright flavors of fresh lemon zest and the peppery goodness of arugula into the spaghetti. Remember to only add the arugula at this late stage to ensure it remains wonderfully crunchy and doesn’t wilt prematurely.
  4. Combine and Season: Finally, add the rinsed capers to the pan. Gently toss all the ingredients together until everything is well combined and evenly distributed. Now it’s time to taste! Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. If you desire an extra tang, a splash more fresh lemon juice can be added. Serve this vibrant dish immediately for the best flavor and texture.

For an extra layer of savory richness and a classic Italian touch, serve your Lemon and Ham Spaghetti generously topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. A sprinkle of red pepper flakes can also add a subtle warmth if you enjoy a hint of spice.

Variations & Serving Suggestions

One of the joys of this Lemon Ham Spaghetti is its adaptability. Feel free to get creative and tailor it to your taste or what you have available:

  • Vegetarian Twist: As mentioned, sun-dried tomatoes are a fantastic substitute for ham. You could also add sautéed mushrooms or zucchini for extra vegetables.
  • Different Proteins: Instead of ham, consider shredded cooked chicken, crispy bacon, or even sautéed shrimp for a seafood variation.
  • Other Greens: If arugula isn’t your favorite, baby spinach, finely chopped kale (added slightly earlier to soften), or watercress would also work well.
  • Add Heat: For a little kick, a pinch of red pepper flakes tossed in with the ham or spaghetti adds a lovely warmth.
  • Extra Creaminess (Optional): While this recipe is designed to be light and cream-free, a tablespoon of mascarpone or a splash of pasta water and olive oil can create a richer sauce if desired.
  • Serving Suggestions: This spaghetti is a complete meal on its own, but it pairs wonderfully with a simple green salad dressed with a vinaigrette, or a side of crusty garlic bread to soak up all the delicious juices. For a sophisticated pairing, a crisp white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio would be a perfect match.

Notes

1. Capers: These flavorful flower buds are packed in a salt and vinegar solution. To balance their intense flavor and prevent them from overpowering your dish, always rinse them thoroughly under cold water before adding them to your pasta. This small step makes a big difference!

2. Prefer a Vegetarian Twist? This recipe is incredibly versatile! You can easily make it vegetarian by replacing the ham cubes with (semi) sun-dried tomatoes. Halve them for easier eating and a burst of savory sweetness in every bite. Sautéed mushrooms or roasted bell peppers are also excellent additions.

3. Arugula’s Freshness: Arugula is a delicate leafy green known for its peppery flavor. It wilts very quickly when exposed to heat. To maintain its delightful crunch and vibrant color, make sure to add it to the pasta only at the very last minute, just before serving. This ensures maximum freshness and texture.

4. Storage & Leftovers:

For best storage, it’s recommended to store the spaghetti and ham mixture separately from the arugula if you anticipate leftovers. Once arugula is mixed in, the pasta is best enjoyed fresh.

How to store this summer spaghetti (without arugula added):

  • Refrigerator: Keep the spaghetti covered in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
  • Freezer: For longer storage, freeze the spaghetti (without arugula) in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to a month. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
  • Reheating: Gently reheat the spaghetti in a microwave or in a frying pan over medium heat with a splash of olive oil or water, stirring occasionally. Once warm, stir in fresh arugula just before serving.
